Homework #4 (MP3)

1) A. The Chinese were horribly addicted and could no longer support anything else besides their addiction to opium.
B. The empire collapsed under itself.

2) The Chinese Emperor started to lose his country when opium was smuggled into China. He lost it further when the Treaty of Nanjing was signed. He finally lost it entirely when he appointed the "boxers" as defenders, due to their belief that by meditation, they would be cloaked in a "shield" that would stop bullets from foreigners.

3) Great Britain brought Chinese society to the brink of collapse by smuggling opium into China, so people will get addicted to it and want more. When this happened, Great Britain shipped opium freely. When China banned opium, Great Britain sent warships to changed the Emperor's mind. This allowed access to most of its ports and gave extraterrestrial privileges to British settlers there.

4) an "Open Door" policy is when a countries ports are forced open to any country that desires to dock into the country via that particular port.
