1) The article in BBC.com speaks about how the US is carefully watching China in terms of the country strengthening its military. When this article was written, it told of how for years, China had missles with nuclear warheads. But they had developed a way of launching these missles mobily. And they have developed a better way of refueling their airplanes, so China's air force would be able to fly farther away from home. The US is also scared because Europe might lift a weapon embargo to China, and it might sell equipment similar to what the US uses.
2) China, after the Opium Wars, was left in chaos and turnmoil. Great Britian had Extraterritorial priviledges in China, and most of the population in China wasaddicted to Opium. China was forced to keep certain ports open to British ships. And they had to surrender Hong King to Great Britian entirely.
3) Compared to after the Opium Wars, China is completely renovated from its chaotic state. Now, the US is one of the countries most addicted to drugs, and it's army is scattered in the Middle East. Chiona; however, is building up its military power in fierce numbers. Not just people, but their also building mobile missle launchers than might be able to launch warheads all the way to the West Coast in the US, and its air force might be able to fly farther than now, able to monitor ita "allies" or even their enemies, or their areas of interest. China's economy is the biggest in the world. The US' economy is still struggling.
