1) CANON LAW are the laws of the church, which dictated many aspects of life, including marriage and religious practices. It also held power over the ruler.
2) If a king does not follow canon law, the Church can use two types of punishment; excommunication and interdict. First, excommunication. If the king did not listen to the pope, or they had quarrel, then the pope would use excommunication. This would deny the king salvation. It also freed the kings vassals.If the king continued to disrespect the king, then the interdict was used. This forbid the people from performing religious rituals and the Sacraments in the king's land. As Christians, they became scared that they would be condemned to eternal hell.
