Congress of Berlin- The meeting of the Great European Powers. The meeting's aim was to reorganize the countries of the Balkans.
Partition of Africa- Occupation and annexation of Africa by European powers during the New Imperialism period, between the 1880s and the First World War in 1914.
Scramble for Africa- European rush to colonize parts of Africa at the end of the 19th century.
1) New Imperialism was about an industrialized economy and the scramble for natural resources benefited the countries that had the greater amount of territory with natural resources.
2) Europe colonized Africa for financial gain by exploiting the land for crops, minerals, and slaves. Later, Europeans believed they should help Africans become modernly civilized.
3) The Industrial Revolution is connected to Europe's colonization of Africa. Africa is rich with natural resources that is used as fuel for the Industrial Revolution. Europe's colonization of Africa was to control as much territory as possible that could be used to extract resources.

Adam smith: He defended the idea of free economy, or free market.
Capitilism:an ecomonic system in which money id transvested in business ventures.
utilitartianism:judge ideas, institutions, and actions based on their utility.
socialism:the factors of production are owned by the public and operate for the welfare of all.
Karl Marx: He introduced the radical socialism of Marxism.
Comunism: a form of complete socialism that is owned by people.
union:collective bargaining.
collective bargaining:negotisnts between workers and their employers.

2) Factors that are needed to create a nation state is Nationality, Language, Culture, History, Religion, and Territory.

4) The Italians lost all Northern Italy except Venetia.
5) The reason why the territories of Prussia were unusual was because there were countries INSIDE the territories which separated Prussia into two or more parts

Jose de San Martin: An Arentinean general who also helped liberate the Spanish colonies.
Miguel Hidalgo: A priest in the village of Dolores who issued a call for rebellion against the Spanish.

1. Simon Boliviar had done a lot of things. He had fought in the French Revolution in Spain, later helps Venezuela declare its independence, helps other countries gain their independence from the Spanish monarchy, forms the Great Colombia, and later gets a country, Bolivia, named in his honor.
2. He is very famous for fighting in a lot of wars, and later forms countries, and has a vision about South America's future.

Nicolaus Copernicus was the person who developed the heliocentric theory.
The heliocentric theory is the theory that Nicolaus developed after more than 25 years, stating that the planets move around the sun.
Johannes Kepler was Nicolaus' assistant, and when he passed away, he continued his work. He mathematically proved that the planets did revolve aound the sun
Galileo Galilei was a man who managed to clear up some thins, and invented his own version of the telescope and used it to look at the sky.
The scientific method is a method of gathering, testing, and confirming information.
Francis Bacon was an English politician and a writer who had a passion for science.
René Descartes was a French man who developed analytical geometry, and the phrase "I think, therefore I am"

Homework #4
1) CANON LAW are the laws of the church, which dictated many aspects of life, including marriage and religious practices. It also held power over the ruler.
2) If a king does not follow canon law, the Church can use two types of punishment; excommunication and interdict. First, excommunication. If the king did not listen to the pope, or they had quarrel, then the pope would use excommunication. This would deny the king salvation. It also freed the kings vassals.If the king continued to disrespect the king, then the interdict was used. This forbid the people from performing religious rituals and the Sacraments in the king's land. As Christians, they became scared that they would be condemned to eternal hell.
